As a sport fisherman, it is essential to be aware of the applicable regulations, including the closed times for certain fish species and bait types. These rules are set to protect fish populations during vulnerable periods, such as spawning. What are the closed times for fishing?

Closed seasons are specific periods during which it is forbidden to fish for certain species of fish or to use specific baits. The aim is to protect fish stocks, especially during the breeding season. During these closed seasons, you must immediately and carefully return any fish you catch of the species in question to the same water.

Closed season fishing with specific baits

From 1 April to the last Saturday of May there is a closed season for certain types of bait in Dutch inland waters. During this period it is forbidden to fish with:

  • Artificial bait (except artificial flies smaller than 2.5 cm)

  • Dead baitfish

  • Pieces of dead baitfish

  • Slaughter products

This measure is intended to protect predatory fish during their spawning season.

  • Pike-perch and perch : From 1 April to the last Saturday in May . If you catch one of these species during this period, you must immediately and carefully release them.

Exceptions and Special Rules

There are some exceptions to the above rules:

  • Artificial flies smaller than 2.5 cm : These are allowed during the closed season for bait species.

  • March and pike : In March you are allowed to fish with artificial bait, but the closed season for pike applies. This means that you must immediately release any pike you catch.
